Maternal and Neonatal Outliers
For Midwives, Nurses, Birth Assistants, and EMS Professionals
When healthcare providers are faced with outliers, whether common, or rare, they benefit from having a standardized way to respond to these events. While it is easy to find training for most birth related outliers, it is far more difficult to find this training geared specifically toward community birth providers. This 8 hour course includes common and uncommon maternal and neonatal outliers such as pre eclampsia, shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, prolapsed cord, maternal cardiac arrest, maternal sepsis, and neonatal hypoglycemia-the final 6 topics will be determined by the host and announced prior to the course. Ethical considerations for each outlier are built into each module, to help community midwives discuss and think through the ethical dilemmas unique to our settings. Each drill is debriefed using hot debriefing techniques developed to help providers learn the most from scenarios and create a culture of safety and learning within their
