Birth Center Focused NRP Survey and Results-Why should you take THIS course?

We surveyed 188 learners from 2019-2022. Our findings are summarized below

  • Despite 39.5% of our learners having 5 or more NRP courses, with a mixture of out of hospital and hospital based courses, the mean learner confidence in PPV before the course was between somewhat confident to moderately confident

“I want to gain more confidence and practice NRP and apply it to the OOH BC setting. I’ve taken hospital based NRP and ‘other home birth courses’, and still felt unprepared for the BC setting. “~Anonymous learner

  • Though 71.7% of learners were 6-24 months out from the AABC NRP course, post course self confidence levels did not have significant decreases in the areas of PPV, intubation, responding to an infant without spontaneous respirations, and responding to an infant with a HR <60

“The AABC Birth Center Focused NRP course changed the emergency equipment we used and improved how we perform staff emergency drills. We plan to schedule an out of hospital course every year for our staff and providers.”~Anonymous learner

  • Further study or analysis is needed to understand why even experienced learners, who had taken in and out of hospital courses, had significant increases in confidence in long term follow up compared to their pre-course levels.

“I’ve only ever taken NRP courses in the hospitals where I work but this course was so much more applicable for a community birth setting.”~Anonymous learner

Even after 5-10 courses in both in hospital and out of hospital settings, the majority of learners only report somewhat-moderate confidence levels for critical skills such as PPV. Our course shows consistent, sustained confidence levels with no significant changes from immediate post course levels, even after up to 2 years time has passed
